Surrogate Faith

“Then Jesus said to the officer, “You may go home now. Your faith has made it happen.” Right then his servant was healed,” (Matthew 8:13, Holy Bible, Contemporary English Version).

This time in the life of Jesus begins when He healed a leper and ends when Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law. Sandwiched between those two events in Capernaum, a Roman Centurion approached Jesus from the crowd. The Centurion described his servant’s condition (verse 6) and Jesus offered to go to the home and heal the servant (verse 7). The Centurion replied that he was not worthy of Jesus’ presence in his home. He asked Jesus to speak the words of healing (verse 8) without making the journey. Jesus was so surprised, He said to the crowd, “I tell you that in all of Israel I’ve never found anyone with this much faith!” (verse 10). Jesus didn’t touch the Centurion. He didn’t pray. He simply told him to go home because the servant was healed. Not because the servant believed, but because the Centurion had faith.

Prayer: Lord, strengthen my faith to be a surrogate for my friends who need Your healing touch. Amen.
