Afraid of the Dark No More

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4, Holy Bible, King James Version)

For years I was afraid of the dark. Perhaps it was my mother’s firm grip on my hand when we walked to church in our small town where street lights were few. Perhaps it was the seed of fear she unwittingly sowed in me by saying “come home before dark” when I went to play at a neighbor’s home within sight of our front porch late in the afternoon. Without my mother nearby, fear of darkness oppressed me until I became a spirit-filled teen.

The New Living Translation says: “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.” I didn’t need to feel my mother’s hand anymore when God became my walking companion. Confidence and trust in God continue to lighten my path even in the darkest times.

Prayer: Thank You for holding my hand all these years, Lord. I am not afraid when You walk with me. Amen.
