“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man,” (Ecclesiastes 12:13, Holy Bible, King James Version).
A defense attorney near the end of a courtroom trial brings a final summation to the jury for deliberation. With dramatic emotions, the attorney attempts to persuade the jury that her client has not violated the law. She asks the jury to proclaim the defendant innocent of the charge. In Ecclesiastes, the writer gives us a different type of summation, clear and concise. He declares that we are to fear God and keep His commandments. It’s not open for discussion or jury vote. God will judge whether each of us have kept this individual obligation.
Prayer: Lord, I’m grateful for this Scripture that reminds me that my basic purpose in life is to follow You. Only You know whether I have met that goal. Amen
