“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17
We are all familiar with the story recorded in John 4 of Jesus’ encounter with the woman of Samaria. He met her at the well and introduced her to the living water.
But in reading this story recently, my attention was drawn to what happened afterwards. After the woman went back into the city and told others about Jesus, the men of the city asked him to stay and for two days He taught them, resulting in many believing in Him.
They told the woman, that they now believed, not because of what she had told them, but they had heard Him for themselves and knew He was indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
So many times in Jesus’ ministry, people sought Him for healing and other miracles. Here in Samaria there is no record of Jesus healing anyone or performing any miracles. He simply taught them and they believed.
The scripture in Romans tells us that faith cometh by hearing the Word of God. We do not seek Him today for miracles and signs and wonders, although these things do come to those who believe. But we believe in Him, because of what His Word tells us. We worship Him for who He is, not what He can do for us.
Prayer: Lord, we thank you for your Word, and we desire to listen to it and obey it. We thank you for all the blessings you give us, but we worship you for who you are.
