So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. (Luke 15:20, NIV)
We have all heard the story of the prodigal son. He decides to take his inheritance and leave the home he had always known. He then wasted his inheritance and found himself at the lowest point of his life. He knew that what he once had far surpassed this new life that he had created for himself and he decided that he wanted to go back. He knew it probably wouldn’t be what it once was but he was willing to give it a try.
The Bible says while he was still afar off the father ran to him. As I read that this morning something clicked in my mind. The son didn’t have to walk all the way to the fathers house on his own. The father had been watching for him and when he saw him taking those steps toward him he ran to meet him. Just like the father ran toward the son, if God sees us taking steps toward him he will always run to meet us. Making that first step of repentance is one of the hardest things to do, but if we can find the courage to do it God will help us with everything else. He is waiting and watching for us.
Prayer: Forgive us for the mistakes we have made in the past. Give us the faith and courage we need to make a step toward you even when it feels like we can’t. In Jesus name, amen.
