What doest thou here?

question why“And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?” 1 Kings 19:9

Now, God knew exactly why Elijah was hiding in a cave. The prophet was scared because Jezebel said she was going to kill him. How quickly he forgot the victory God had  accomplished through him at Mount Carmel.

So God asked Elijah this question to force him to think about his actions. Why was he hiding from one miserable woman when he had the power of the God of the universe behind him? Elijah had fallen into the trap of fear.

Sometimes that happens to us too… a seemingly impossible situation looms ahead of us, and we can’t think of anything to do but run and hide. God wants to know: “What are you doing here?”

Prayer: Lord, let me never forget that I do not need to fear anything that comes against me. You are by my side and Your strength will uphold me.
