“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.” Matthew 5:10-12
Of all the difficult situations described in the Beatitudes where Jesus said we would be blessed, this one is the toughest! Can we be blessed when our right actions result in us being treated wrongly? Yes, if our trust is completely in God.
God has a special reward in heaven for those who go through persecution for His sake. It must be something incredible, because He tells us to rejoice and be exceeding glad if we are granted the opportunity to suffer for Him.
And we are in good company… the prophets were mistreated for doing God’s will. So if it happens to you, instead of asking why, just be thankful you have the opportunity of a great reward for persecution. You will be so blessed!
Prayer: Lord, it seems like there will always be people to attack those who are doing right. Help me to rejoice if this happens to me, and to trust in You completely. You will reward me in due time.
