And he said to them, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. (Luke 10:2, ESV)
When I think about the fall I am often reminded of the hours that my siblings and I would spend in the potato fields harvesting with my dad. Rain or shine he would insist that we climb onto the massive harvester and pick through hundreds upon thousands of potatoes. While at the time I would be anything but optimistic, looking back those are some of my fondest memories. My poor dad. He was such a diligent worker and in retrospect he asked for very little of his five children. Harvesting anything requires work that is far to great for one person. The machine we would ride on needed at least four people at all times to even function properly.
The harvest is plentiful. More than ever before, there are people that are starving to hear the message of Jesus’ love and yet there are so few people to tell them. We need labourers who are not afraid to get their hands dirty! Jesus is coming back soon and if we don’t share His gospel, people will continue to live their lives without ever knowing the comfort of His love and mercy.
Prayer: Lord, give us the boldness we need to share your gospel with our co-workers, friends and family. Open our eyes the importance of sharing your Word. Use us in Jesus name, amen.
