So I run—but not without a clear goal ahead of me. So I box—but not as if I were just shadow boxing. (1 Corinthians 9:26, Holy Bible, God’s Word Translation)
Apostle Paul often described himself in athletic terms, especially as a runner. Writing to the church at Corinth, he mentions his running abilities. Then, he adds “…but not without a clear goal ahead of me.” Running needs a specific goal.
Paul adds boxing to his list of exercises. Again, he emphasizes a specific goal saying shadowboxing doesn’t work for him because he needs an opponent—a reason to win.
If you’re running aimlessly or shadowboxing with no specific purpose, take a break. Set your Christian exercise goals. Then run with a clear goal and make your punches count.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach me to run with purpose. And when opposition gets in my way of serving you, help me to stand up for my beliefs with solid punches of Scripture. Amen.
