Here is a boy with five loaves of barley bread and two little fish. But that is not enough for so many people. (John 6:9, Holy Bible, Easy-to-Read Version)
While arranging silk flowers, I used all the full greenery I had to compliment variegated purple blossoms. Still, empty spaces begged for more. I added small white flowers and sprigs of greenery extended on metal picks. The tiny pieces filled the emptiness and made the altarpiece complete. My mind flashed to the lad with a small lunch.
“He gave them as much as they wanted. They all had plenty to eat. (v.v. 11-b; 12a).
I remembered the lad’s generosity. Eating his lunch alone would have satisfied only him, but not for long. Giving to the Master, becoming a part of the big picture, satisfied him and a multitude of onlookers.
Pray: Lord Jesus, when I think I have nothing significant to contribute, I remember the small boy’s lunch. I can’t forget the tiny sprigs of greenery, useless alone, but satisfying as part of a greater arrangement. Amen.
