“Samuel took the flask of olive oil and anointed David in the presence of his brothers. The Lord’s Spirit came over David and stayed with him from that day on. Then Samuel left for Ramah.” (1 Samuel 16:13, God’s Word Translation)
We’ve all heard this story a million times. Samuel comes to anoint one of Jesse’s sons and everyone is shocked when Samuel announces that David is the chosen King. What really gets me about this story is the fact that nobody even considered David. Even his own father didn’t think to invite him in as he showed off the brothers because he didn’t “fit the part”.
God chooses to anoint certain people for a reason. You may be an unlikely choice in the eyes of everyone around you but if you feel that God has called you out to fulfill a certain role in ministry, I pray that you would have enough courage to go for it. We have a tendency to hold back because we are scared of what people will think. We all have a purpose even if we can’t yet see it for ourselves.
Prayer: Open us up to whatever you have called us to do. I pray that you would call each of us to a higher level today, Lord. Grant us the confidence that we need! In Jesus name, amen.
